GAP: This month we were assigned to incorporate GAP instruction into our lessons. I incorporated GAP in way to keep the assignment more simple. After introducing a lesson I normally follow up by having the kids complete an assignment and I would walk around the room and address any misconceptions or help the kids where they needed it. Instead, this time I used GAP which required the kids to assess their understanding before beginning the assignment. I had the kids write a letter at the top of their paper to grade their understanding. If they were an "A" this meant they understood the material, they had no questions and were good to work on their own. This group moved to the back of the room to work individually. If they graded themselves as a "B" they had one or two questions but they understood the information and could apply it once the questions were addressed. They moved to the middle of the room and once the questions were answered they moved to the back. If they graded themselves a "C" the students moved to the front of the room where I worked with them to go over the information again and fully address their concerns. These students graded themselves feeling very confused and needed further instruction. Overall I think GAP worked well, especially in my honors classes. However, in my regular class the kids did not want to grade themselves as anything other than "A's". This made it very difficult to fully assess the students and their understanding.
